Frequently Asked Questions
We offer programs for children of all ages starting at 4 years old. Each of our programs is specifically tailored to enhance the physical and developmental abilities of that age group. Additionally, our Certified Leaders (Instructors) are skilled at working with children of all age groups and adapting their teaching strategies and communication style to suit everyone's needs.
Yes! At Tiger-Rock Martial Arts we practice martial arts in a controlled environment, prioritizing safety above all. Our Certified Leaders (Instructors) are trained in "Sport Safe" safety protocols, and our curriculum is designed to minimize the risk of injury, focusing on controlled movements and supervised sparring. On the mat, we group students by age, size, and experience to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
We encourage you to try out your first class! This will allow you to evaluate us, making sure you feel safe and comfortable, and allowing you to observe the interaction between the students and instructors on the mat. We want you and your child to enjoy your time here and to feel comfortable with our learning environment and instructors. Tiger-Rock Martial Arts is proud to offer karate classes and martial arts classes for every age, because we believe every student deserves the chance to grow, compete, and be unstoppable.
We want everyone to feel a part of the Tiger-Rock Martial Arts family. Upon your enrollment, we will review everything you need to become a successful martial artist. From basic protocols to assistance in class, we are here to help and assist you on your martial arts journey. Our Certified Leaders are here to empower every student, enriching their personal and athletic lives through martial arts classes rooted in discipline, respect, and the drive to be transformed.
We know you are busy, that's why we have a flexible schedule that offers a variety of lesson times. We encourage all students to train just two times each week, via a variety of lesson times and training opportunities.
How fast you advance is up to you! Our program is tailored to each student's pace, ensuring they feel challenged yet comfortable with their progress. Tiger-Rock Martial Arts aims to empower our students to overcome obstacles both in class and in life. We offer regular assessments to evaluate each student's progress and to renew their goals. Students who commit to their karate lessons consistently are amazed by how quickly they become unstoppable.
Our Certified Leaders (Instructors) are not only experienced martial artists but are also trained to teach and encourage others. Every Certified Leader (Instructor) must pass an annual recertification course that includes leadership training, curriculum knowledge, and "Sport Safe" requirements.
Students attending class for the first time should wear something comfortable that they can move freely in. If you have purchased a starter package, we will have your training uniform ready for you when you arrive for your first class!
Martial Arts is a journey, not a destination. There is no set time frame for earning a Black Belt. Evaluation periods are offered every two months and how fast a student progresses is based on their performance and readiness. However, we encourage all students to train until Black Belt and beyond! We have many students who continue for many years, even after earning their Black Belt.
Tiger-Rock Martial Arts has its roots in Ho-Am Taekwondo but our style has evolved over time to blend various martial arts styles and modern sports science to create our proprietary style of Tiger-Rock Martial Arts. We offer programs for every age and goal — from karate for kids and karate for teens to adult martial arts — so that every student who walks through our doors can be transformed into a stronger, more confident version of themselves. Whether you have been searching for taekwondo near me or karate classes, Tiger-Rock Martial Arts has a program for you!
Both, and that's by design. At Tiger-Rock Martial Arts, our core values are built around three principles: Compete. Defend. Advance. Our adult martial arts classes deliver high-energy, full-body training that sharpens agility, endurance, and situational awareness. Our training is ideal for anyone who has been searching for self-defense classes near me and wants results both on and off the mat.
Mistakes will happen, but at Tiger-Rock Martial Arts, our goal is to catch every student doing something right. If a student is struggling, we aim to "praise, correct, praise" until each student gets it right. Respect, teamwork, and positive reinforcement are the pillars of our teaching. We believe in and foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.
Martial arts teaches discipline and self-control. Our curriculum emphasizes using martial arts for self-defense and physical fitness, not aggression. We instill values of peace and respect in our students. Additionally, many students find stress relief through participation and in turn become more calm and more focused.
We understand the importance of balance, and we also know how busy our lives can be. This is exactly why we offer a flexible lesson schedule with multiple training opportunities, so you can train when it is convenient for you.
Karate for kids is different from traditional sports because it focuses on personal growth rather than competition. If a parent makes and keeps the commitment of ensuring their child attends karate lessons once or twice per week, their child will learn and excel in their training. The belt progression system in our karate classes provides regular milestones and achievements that keep children motivated. Kids that train consistently in our martial arts classes will progress steadily and should have no problem reaching the life-changing goal of Black Belt.
No, your child will not be fighting in martial arts classes. At Tiger-Rock Martial Arts, our focus is on teaching skills, not encouraging aggression. Kids learn martial arts techniques in a safe, structured environment through drills, forms, and partner exercises. While they may practice controlled movements with classmates, there's no full-contact sparring unless they're older, more advanced, and choose to participate under close supervision.
Every child has what it takes to be good at karate because in martial arts classes they are not competing or comparing themselves with anyone else. Karate classes for children are more than just punching and kicking – character development training is just as important as physical techniques. Once we develop a child's confidence through our beginner karate classes, they can achieve anything they set their mind to. Our belt system celebrates individual progress, making every child feel successful.
No way! As a matter of fact, we are careful to teach our students to use common sense before self-defense. In our karate classes, children are taught to make smart decisions when it comes to self-defense from the first day of class. Martial arts that teach discipline help children develop better self-control and respect for others. They will know when it is the right time to use what they have been taught, and more importantly, when not to use it. Parents searching for karate near me can feel confident that Tiger-Rock Martial Arts builds character alongside physical skills.
It is up to you! You can join in if you're interested; if not, you are more than welcome to sit back and watch. In fact, we have specific martial arts classes for adults. Come and try your first class!
Our classes are a great workout, and because you're pushing both your body and your mind during martial arts in a social environment where your peers are cheering you on, you have a built-in community of peers and friends who will help you meet your goals.
The world can be a dangerous place, and the knowledge to avoid, mitigate and stand up against potentially dangerous situations is a skill set that can help keep you and your loved ones safe. At Tiger-Rock Martial Arts, our self-defense classes go beyond technique — they build awareness, confidence, and resilience to protect themselves and their friends/family. If you've been searching for self-defense classes near me, Tiger-Rock Martial Arts' proven curriculum is built to equip every student with skills they can use for life.
